Hmmm... That's a good question. There's a couple tricks I consciously use, I just don't know what they are. xD What I always do is try an impression and work from there, adjust the pitch and tone of my voice till I have what I want. Also, don't be afraid to open your mouth wide. I find that helps really bring out the gusto in my voice.

Practice. I've been imitating (or at least trying to imitate) characters as long as I can remember. Now, it's just natural. It's hard to explain, but there's nothing really to it. I just change the tone in my voice and try to match other characters, and I also try to get a sense of how high or low I can get my voice before it isn't good anymore. I know, it wasn't that much help, but I'm trying.

I think once you make a voice come out, keep on trying it and your body will remember the pitch. Just play around with your voice and you're sure to find something. The breath does help a lot too!
